In a house near the sea, the first question about tiles is not the colour but the water: where does washing water and rain go, and what does salty humidity do to the joints? That is why a tile installer in Ras Tanura with Aemar Al-Maryam General Contracting starts with the paving around villas, laying it to fall away from the walls, renews grout that has turned black or cracked, sets laundry rooms and bathrooms to fall properly to their drains, and then lays ceramic, porcelain and marble inside the house. We reach Ras Tanura and Rahimah on appointments booked ahead from Dammam. Courtyard and path labour with falls starts from SAR 37 per square metre and ceramic floors from SAR 23; these are opening figures confirmed after the visit. Call or WhatsApp 0547879578.
This small seaside town is best known for the Aramco port and its oil storage and export facilities, with the sea on more than one side. For a homeowner that means humid, salt-laden air for much of the year and ground around the house that can be damp close to the surface. None of this rules out any kind of tile, but it punishes small mistakes quickly: a reversed fall that sends water to the foot of the wall, a joint forgotten at the edge of the paving, or cheap grout that turns into black lines within months. Below we cover the coastal jobs that keep our Ras Tanura crew busiest, then the prices and how travel is worked out.
The guide at a glance
- Paving and courtyards: anti-slip outdoor tiles falling away from the wall towards the garden or a drain, with movement joints and a skirting that protects the wall base.
- Grout: old darkened joints raked out and refilled with new cement grout or epoxy when the tiles themselves are sound.
- Laundry rooms and bathrooms: falls towards the drain with diagonal cuts around it, over waterproofing that is water-tested before tiling.
- Opening prices: SAR 37 a metre for paths and courtyards laid to falls, 23 for ceramic, 32 for porcelain to 60×60, 36 for bathroom floors and walls, 92 for marble.
- Travel: the trip from Dammam is estimated at the inspection, and the more work that goes into one visit, the smaller each item’s share becomes.
Tile installer in Ras Tanura: water first, then tiles
A tile installer in Ras Tanura maps the path of the water before opening a single box. We stand outside the house and ask: where is the nearest drain or garden the water can go to? How high is the door threshold compared with the ground outside? Are there white salts or flaking at the base of the walls? Is the laundry-room drain really at the lowest point? The answers set the falls, the materials and the order of work, and only then do colour and size come into it.
■ Paving around a villa
Matt outdoor tiles at a sensible width, falling away from the wall and finishing against a stone skirting.
■ Tired grout
Black or crumbling joints on sound tiles: we rake them out and refill without breaking anything.
■ Laundry room
A drain at the lowest point, with tiles cut to slope towards it from four sides.
■ Inside the house
Ceramic, porcelain and marble for rooms, halls and stairs, with an adhesive suited to humid air.
Villa paving tiles in Ras Tanura
Paving around villas is the outdoor job we are called for most in Ras Tanura, because the pavement around the house is the first line of defence for the bottom of the walls. Good paving combines three things: a surface that does not get slippery when wet, a fall that pushes water away from the house, and a flexible joint where it meets the wall. If any one is missing, the wall shows it before the tiles do.
Why should paving fall away from the wall?
Water standing at the foot of a wall soaks into it and climbs by capillary action, carrying salts that crystallise in the plaster and paint and make them flake. So the paving is set with a 1–2% slope running from the wall towards the garden or a drain, in other words a centimetre or two over each metre of width. The eye barely notices it; the water does. If the outside ground is higher than the base of the wall, we discuss lowering it or adding a drainage channel before any tiling starts.
A skirting that protects the base of the wall
On coastal houses we prefer the paving to stop against a stone or outdoor-tile skirting high enough to shield the base of the wall from washing spray and rain, rather than running straight into the plaster. Between tiles and wall we leave a gap filled with a flexible exterior sealant, because tiles and wall move by different amounts in the heat. Skirting starts from SAR 14 per linear metre.
Movement joints in exposed paving
Outdoor tiles expand in the sun and shrink at night, and without joints they tent up or crack at the edges. We therefore divide paving with flexible joints no more than about three and a half metres apart (2.4 to 3.6 m depending on sun exposure) and add a joint at every wall, threshold and column. Outdoor tiles are bedded in an improved, deformable cementitious adhesive with at least 95% back coverage, because any void under an outdoor tile fills with water and then pushes the tile up.
⚠ Salts before tiles
If you see white patches or a salty powder at the base of the wall or on the old paving, that is water carrying salts from the soil or the air. Changing the tiles alone will not stop it. We find the source first, which may mean waterproofing the wall base or adjusting ground levels, and only then tile.
If the lower walls are already flaking from damp, the plaster is best repaired with a plastering contractor in Ras Tanura before or alongside the paving, so the damage is not simply hidden behind a new skirting.
Courtyard tiles in Ras Tanura: choosing the surface and repairing old floors
Courtyard tiles in Ras Tanura must be genuinely outdoor products: matt or textured porcelain or a suitable natural stone, not a glossy indoor tile that turns to glass in the morning dew. We choose a size that lets us achieve the falls without excessive cutting, and place drains so water does not travel far across the tiles. Labour for a courtyard or path, with its falls set out, begins at SAR 37 per square metre.
Repair the courtyard or retile it completely?
If the problem is a few scattered cracked or hollow tiles, replacing and re-bedding them is enough; it is a small repair starting at SAR 92 and growing with the number of tiles. If water stands in several places, or large areas sound hollow, the fault lies in the fall or the base, and only lifting (from SAR 14 per metre), re-levelling and retiling will fix it. We always prefer to see a courtyard just after it has been washed, because where the water sits tells us more than any photo.
If you prefer interlock for garden paths or parking, see our interlock and kerbs service.
Regrouting in Ras Tanura without breaking the tiles
Regrouting in Ras Tanura brings a floor back to life when the tiles are sound and only the joints have darkened or crumbled. Ordinary cement grout is porous; in humid air it absorbs water and dirt, dark stains grow on it, and it can crack away from the tile edges. In many homes the answer is not a new floor but raking the old grout out to a proper depth and filling the joints again.

How we regrout a floor
- 1Check the tiles first
We tap the floor; if many tiles ring hollow, the problem is under the tiles and grout alone will not help. - 2Rake out the joints
The old grout is removed with a hand or power tool, carefully, so the tile edges are not chipped. - 3Clean and dry
Dust is vacuumed out and the joints left to dry, because new grout will not hold on damp or dust. - 4Fill
Joints are packed with an improved cement grout or epoxy depending on the room, pressed in firmly with no voids. - 5Final clean
Residue is removed from the tile face before it hardens, and the floor is kept dry for the time the product specifies.
Cement grout or epoxy in a coastal home?
In dry rooms an improved cement grout in a colour that does not show dirt quickly is enough. In bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchen floors epoxy is the better choice, because it does not absorb water or change colour with cleaners. Epoxy costs more and has to be worked faster, and regrouting in general is priced at inspection according to the area, the joint width and the material.
When is regrouting not enough?
If cracks keep coming back along the same joints after renewal, or tiles move underfoot, the cause is movement or a void under the tiles. Then we fix the base or cut in movement joints; otherwise the new grout will crack just like the old.
Keeping new grout clean in humid air
New grout needs a few gentle days: no heavy washing before the time the product states, and no acidic cleaners or strong bleach afterwards, since they eat cement grout and change its colour. In bathrooms and laundry rooms it helps to squeegee the floor dry after use instead of leaving it to dry on its own, and to keep the extractor running long enough after a shower. If you chose cement grout for the dry rooms, a joint sealer applied once it has fully cured makes it far less absorbent. These are small habits, but they decide whether joints stay clean for years or go dark again after one humid season.
Laundry room tiling in Ras Tanura and getting the drain right
Laundry room tiling in Ras Tanura deserves the same care as a bathroom: washing machines overflow, hoses come loose and the floor is washed often. The rule is a drain at the lowest point, a floor falling to it from every side, and tested waterproofing under the tiles.

Diagonal cuts around the drain
When the drain sits in the middle of the floor, sloping the tiles in one direction is not enough. We divide the area around it into four triangles that all fall towards the drain and cut the surrounding tiles on the diagonal, so the lines of fall are straight and tidy. That way no water is left in a corner and no tile edge stands proud of its neighbour at the drain. If the drain is in the wrong place or set too high, we arrange for it to be moved or lowered by a plumber in Ras Tanura before tiling.
For a laundry floor we use matt porcelain that does not get slippery with water and soap, and take the wall ceramics behind the washing machine high enough to protect the wall from splashes. Porcelain in sizes up to 60×60 starts at SAR 32 per square metre in labour, and wall ceramics at SAR 27.
Bathroom retiling in Ras Tanura
Retiling a bathroom in Ras Tanura means stripping back to bare concrete, because an old bathroom leaking into the next room is not cured by new tiles on top of old ones. Once the floor is open, leaking joints in the pipes are repaired, a screed is formed so the shower zone slopes roughly 2% to its drain with a shallower fall elsewhere, a membrane is laid and lapped up the walls, and the room is flooded for one to two days to prove it holds, and then tile.
Every bathroom tile is bedded in improved adhesive covering 95% or more of its back, with a flexible joint left where tiles meet the bath or shower tray. Labour for a bathroom’s floor and walls starts at SAR 36 per square metre, and a small bathroom stripped, waterproofed and retiled with economy tiles from SAR 2,300. The waterproofing is explained in roof waterproofing and insulation in Ras Tanura, and complete bathroom renewal under our bathroom and kitchen renovation service.
Tile installation in Ras Tanura inside the house
Tile installation in Ras Tanura inside the rooms follows the same principles as anywhere, but humidity makes us stricter on two points: the floor must be dry before tiling, and the adhesive must cover the back of each tile properly. A tile with a void under it collects moisture, and a wet floor delays the adhesive setting.
Ceramic tile installation in Ras Tanura for rooms and walls
Ceramic tile installation in Ras Tanura suits bedrooms and walls, since ceramic is lighter and easier to cut than porcelain. Kitchen and bathroom walls start from a level row set on a horizontal batten, using an adhesive that stops tiles sliding down before it sets. Laying ceramic on a floor costs SAR 23 a square metre upwards.
Large-format porcelain installation in Ras Tanura
Porcelain installation in Ras Tanura in 60×120 or 120×120 gives a hall a wide look with few joints, but it needs a very flat floor: a 3-metre straightedge should show a gap of no more than about 3 mm. We use an improved adhesive, back-butter each large panel as well as combing the floor, and use a levelling system on the edges. Labour for 60×120 starts at SAR 37, and for 100×100 and 120×120 at SAR 46 per square metre.
Tiler in Ras Tanura: what gets checked before work starts
- ✓Flatness: a long straightedge in several directions, with levelling where needed (from SAR 14 a metre).
- ✓Moisture: no tiling on a wet floor or one with visible salts.
- ✓Movement joints: around the room edges, concealed by the skirting, and through big open floors.
- ✓Joint width: at least triple the size difference between tiles, around 3 mm for rectified tiles.
- ✓Doors and thresholds: the new floor level checked against doors and drains.
Marble and granite installation in Ras Tanura
Labour for marble in Ras Tanura is SAR 92 per square metre upwards, and the stone suits halls, inside entrances and stairs. Outdoors and at exposed entrances, textured granite is the better choice because weak acids do not affect it and it resists slipping. Light marble goes down on a white adhesive so no grey shadow shows through, and some moisture-sensitive types need a fast-setting adhesive, because humid air raises the risk of them curling if the bed underneath dries slowly.
Marble stairs in Ras Tanura
Each step of a Ras Tanura staircase is measured individually before the marble goes on, because consecutive risers should not differ by more than about 9.5 mm, and extra marble thickness on the first step alone breaks that rule. For outside steps we choose an anti-slip surface or cut grooves near the nosing. Stair cladding labour starts at SAR 46 per square metre of clad surface, with the marble priced on the type you choose.
Tiling defects in coastal Ras Tanura homes and their causes
Tiling defects in Ras Tanura repeat in familiar forms, and most have nothing to do with the quality of the tile itself but with what lies under and around it. The table below helps you read the signs in your own home before deciding to break anything out:
| What you see | The usual coastal cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| White powder on joints or at the wall base | Rising damp or salt spray evaporating at the surface | Stop the water, correct the fall, then clean and regrout |
| Water standing next to the wall after washing | Paving falling towards the house instead of away | Lift the paving and relay it falling to the garden or a drain |
| Black lines in bathroom and laundry joints | Porous cement grout soaking up water and dirt | Rake out and refill with epoxy |
| Outdoor tiles lifted into a ridge | No movement joints combined with sun heat | Cut in flexible joints and relay the raised tiles |
| A tile that rings underfoot | Spot-bonded adhesive or uncompacted fill | Lift, clean underneath and re-bed with full coverage |
| Dark stains on light marble | Moisture under the stone or the wrong adhesive colour | Lift and re-bed on a white fast-setting adhesive |
Many of these defects can be avoided from the start with simple steps: clean mixing water rather than salty water, washed sand in the screed, a dry floor before bedding, and a flexible joint at every wall. These steps barely change the cost, but they decide whether the tiles last for years or the work comes back after a single summer.
Outdoor porcelain, stone or interlock for villa paving?
Matt outdoor porcelain is easy to clean and colour-fast, and needs a flat concrete base and a deformable adhesive. Natural stone looks warmer and resists slipping, but it is heavier and you need a type that is not affected by salts. Interlock is laid on a compacted sand bed and is easy to lift and relay, which suits paths and parking more than paving tight against walls. We help you choose by use and budget, and lay the tiles and stone ourselves.
Marble polishing and hollow tile repair in Ras Tanura
Marble polishing in Ras Tanura removes scratches and dull marks and brings back the shine, using diamond pads graded from coarse to fine and finishing with a protective coat. Expect SAR 14 a square metre and up, dropping to SAR 9 on large areas of 200 m² and more. Hollow tiles that ring when tapped are lifted, cleaned underneath and re-bedded with full coverage, with small repairs from SAR 92. If hollowness keeps spreading over a large area, the cause may be in the base or the concrete, and we look at it with crack repair in Ras Tanura.

How much does a tiler cost per metre in Ras Tanura?
Ceramic floors begin at SAR 23 a square metre, paving and courtyards with falls at SAR 37, and porcelain no larger than 60×60 at SAR 32. These are mostly labour rates, so tiles, adhesive and grout are on the owner unless we agree to supply them; the only line that includes materials is economy tiles with adhesive, from SAR 37.
Travel to Ras Tanura: how is it priced?
We do not put a fixed figure on the Ras Tanura trip; it is worked out on site once the number of working days is clear, since the vehicle, tools and crew cost about the same for ten tiles as for a whole house. Hence our advice to let small jobs build up: paving, regrouting and the laundry room in one visit means the travel cost is spread across more work. If a neighbour needs similar work at the same time, that lightens the cost for both of you.
Worked example: paving around a villa in Ras Tanura
A villa measuring 15 × 12 metres outside, where the owner wants the old surrounding pavement lifted and new paving laid 1.2 metres wide, falling away from the wall:
- ✓Outer area including the paving: (15 + 2.4) × (12 + 2.4) = 17.4 × 14.4 = 250.56 m².
- ✓Villa footprint: 15 × 12 = 180 m².
- ✓Paving area: 250.56 − 180 = 70.56 m².
- ✓Lifting the old pavement: 70.56 × 14 = SAR 987.84.
- ✓New paving with falls: 70.56 × 37 = SAR 2,610.72.
- ✓Estimated labour total: 987.84 + 2,610.72 = SAR 3,598.56, about SAR 3,599, before tiles, skirting and travel.
A worked illustration, not a quote; the figure changes after inspection if the base needs repair or salts must be treated before tiling.
