Sea air in Ras Tanura reaches every electrical box outside the house and much of what is inside it, so the work of an electrician in Ras Tanura from Aemar Al-Maryam General Contracting starts with one simple question: what here is exposed to salt and moisture? On scheduled visits we carry out electrical rough-in and rewiring, fit sealed corrosion-resistant junction boxes with watertight cable glands, wire rooftop booster pumps with weatherproof outdoor isolators, install RCDs and test them with a proper tester, and renew boards, earthing and outdoor lighting. Labour begins at SAR 37 per rough-in point, SAR 75 per outdoor light, SAR 90 per added breaker and SAR 90 for a test visit; we confirm every figure, and the trip cost from Dammam, once we have walked the house. Call or WhatsApp 0547879578.
Ras Tanura, once known as Rahima, sits on a spit of land with water on more than one side, and is home to one of the largest oil export and storage ports anywhere. What matters for us is that its houses live with salt carried in the air and with humidity that condenses on walls in the early morning. That salt does not only spoil plaster and paint. It gets into outdoor boxes, rusts screws and terminals, and turns an outdoor socket into the reason the RCD trips every morning. This guide explains how we build electrics that cope with those conditions, what we check in an older house, and how we price and schedule work in a town we reach from Dammam.
What you need to know about electrics in Ras Tanura
- The main problem: corrosion in outdoor boxes and terminals from salt and humidity, and RCDs tripping after dew or rain.
- Our answer: sealed boxes with rubber-gasketed covers, sealed glands where conduits enter, corrosion-resistant screws, and entries from below.
- Pumps and tanks: a dedicated line for the pump with its own breaker, a weatherproof outdoor isolator beside it, and RCD protection.
- RCDs: 30 mA protection for sockets, wet areas and outdoor circuits, tested with an RCD tester and the result written down.
- Prices start from: rough-in point 37, outdoor light 75, new breaker 90, board servicing 185, new board 370, earthing 275 SAR. Travel is set at inspection.
- Booking: scheduled visits, grouping jobs in the same area into one trip. We are not an emergency service.
Why do electrics wear out faster in Ras Tanura?
Because air near the sea carries a fine salty mist that settles on every surface, and when humidity rises at night the salt dissolves into a thin film of water covering the metal. Salt water conducts electricity and drives corrosion hard. It eats copper terminals, rusts steel screws and ungalvanised metal boxes, and finds its way into any box whose cover does not seal. The result shows within a few years on a house whose outdoor electrics were built with ordinary indoor parts.
There is a second source of moisture that few people notice: condensation. When an air conditioner cools a room while outside it is hot and muggy, water condenses on cold surfaces, sometimes including boxes and conduits that run between inside and outside. So we seal conduit openings that cross the outside wall, so the cable route does not become a path for humid air to condense inside the box. On roofs, the occasional rain collects around the bases of pumps and outdoor units, so we lift boxes off the floor and fix them to the wall rather than the tiles.
- An outdoor socket that trips the RCD in the morning and works again once the sun has dried the damp.
- Dead wall floodlights because water got into the back box and ate the terminals.
- Rusted cover screws that will not turn, and a cover that cracked when someone forced it.
- Green deposits on copper terminals inside the rooftop pump box or the outdoor AC isolator.
- A board on an outside wall with corroded busbars and loose terminals.
None of these signs means the whole house needs rewiring. Often it is enough to replace the outdoor parts with sealed, corrosion-resistant ones, clean or replace the terminals, and put the outdoor circuits on an RCD of their own. But the decision comes after measuring, not before.
Sealed corrosion-resistant boxes and glands in Ras Tanura
An outdoor box in Ras Tanura has to keep water and dust out, resist corrosion in its body and screws, and be fitted in a way that never collects water. We use boxes in UV-stable plastic or corrosion-resistant metal, with a cover that has a rubber gasket pressing against the body when the screws are tightened, and an ingress rating suited to outdoor use in rain and spray, usually IP65 or better, and higher still where a fitting could be submerged.
The weak point of any box is where the conduit or cable enters. There we fit a sealed gland, a fitting that squeezes a rubber ring around the cable or conduit and closes the gap. We prefer conduits to enter from below rather than above, so water does not run down the cable into the box, and we leave a small drip loop in the cable before the box so drops fall off before they reach it.
How we renew a rusted outdoor box, step by step
We isolate the circuit at the board and prove it dead with a tester, then open the box and inspect the terminals. If the copper is sound under the oxide we cut back to clean metal; if corrosion has crept along the conductor we replace the section back to the nearest sound box. Then we fit the new sealed box in the same place, or somewhere less exposed to spray, fit the glands, join the conductors with sealed connectors, tighten the cover onto its gasket, restore the supply, measure insulation and test the RCD that protects the circuit.
| Location | What we fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Facade facing the sea | Sealed gasketed boxes, glands and corrosion-resistant screws | Direct salt spray |
| Roof beside the tank and pump | Weatherproof isolator and sealed junction box | Water, sun and heat |
| Boundary wall and gate | Floodlights and fittings rated for outdoor use | Rain and dust |
| Yard and open walkways | Buried conduits with warning tape and sealed boxes | Damp ground |
| Laundry and bathrooms | RCD-protected sockets placed outside spray zones | Indoor humidity |
Do not paint over the box cover
Paint over the gasket or the screws stops the cover from sealing and makes it hard to open for maintenance. Ask the painters to mask outdoor boxes before spraying.
RCDs in Ras Tanura: how we fit and test them
A residual current device compares the current going into a circuit with the current coming back. Should part of it find a path to earth, through a person or through moisture in a box, the RCD disconnects the circuit within a fraction of a second. The Saudi Electrical Code SBC 401, based on the international IEC 60364 standards, asks for 30 mA earth-leakage protection, at most, on socket circuits and in bathrooms, and we extend that to the kitchen, the laundry and outdoor circuits.
In a house near the sea we spread the protection over several RCDs instead of one for the whole house: one for outdoor circuits, one for bathrooms and the laundry, and one for room sockets. That way, if damp gets into a boundary-wall floodlight on a humid night, the fridge and the bedrooms do not lose power.

Testing an RCD is more than pressing its test button. We plug an RCD tester into a socket, which passes a calculated leakage current and measures how long the device takes to disconnect, and we record the result for every RCD on a sheet we hand to you. An RCD that trips slowly or not at all is replaced; a new breaker or RCD fitted to the board starts from SAR 90. We also advise pressing the test button on each RCD from time to time, as manufacturers recommend, to make sure its mechanism has not stuck.
Wiring the rooftop booster pump and water tank in Ras Tanura
The booster pump beside the rooftop tank works in sun and humidity and needs electrics designed for it: a dedicated line from the board with its own breaker, a weatherproof outdoor isolator fixed to the wall next to the pump so it can be switched off on the spot before maintenance, a cable in sun-resistant conduit up to the pump terminal box, and RCD protection. We never feed the pump from a roof socket, and we never leave the cable lying on the roof in direct sun.

The pump itself, choosing it, piping it to the tank and fitting the non-return valves is plumbing work. We agree the positions of the pump, the isolator and the breaker with the plumber before installation, and the water side is covered in plumber in Ras Tanura. A pump line with an outdoor isolator is quoted once we have measured the run from the board and seen how we get onto the roof.
Electrician in Ras Tanura: how we schedule visits from Dammam
Ras Tanura lies outside our daily round in Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran, so we work there on scheduled visits. You send photos first, we estimate the job, then we fix an inspection day and try to group several jobs in the same area on it. There is no flat call-out fee: the trip is priced on the day we inspect, from how long the job runs, how many electricians it needs and what has to be carried. Booking outdoor boxes, the pump feed and a board service together spreads that trip across all three.
We are a booked contractor, not a rescue line. Smoke, sparks or a hot, burning smell call for the main switch to be turned off, if it can be done without risk, then distance from the board and a call to Civil Defence or to SEC’s emergency fault service. When it is safe again, we arrange a visit to trace and repair the fault.
Electrical contractor in Ras Tanura or a call-out electrician?
A call-out electrician suits a single socket or lamp, and we add small jobs like that to a booked visit. When outdoor faults keep coming back, when the house needs its circuits separated and its protection spread out, when it needs rewiring, or when a new house is being built, you need an electrical contractor who measures before deciding, works from a drawing, chooses parts for where they will sit, and hands you written test results. That is what we offer in Ras Tanura: planned work by a full crew, not a quick call-out.
■ Outdoor electrics renewal
Sealed boxes, floodlights and outdoor sockets in place of parts eaten by rust.
■ Pumps and tanks
A dedicated line, an outdoor isolator and RCD protection.
■ Boards and protection
Servicing and replacement, with protection spread over several RCDs.
■ New-build rough-in
Wiring planned for humidity from day one, and tested before plaster.
Electrical rough-in for new houses and villas in Ras Tanura
In a new house we carry out rough-in after the blockwork and before plaster, as in any city, but we add what the coastal setting demands: galvanised or plastic boxes in damp areas instead of plain steel, sun-resistant conduit outdoors, outdoor boxes on the walls least exposed to spray where possible, and a board inside the house rather than on the facade. We also plan outdoor circuits separately from the start so they get their own protection.
In a new build we charge from SAR 37 per lighting or socket point, or from SAR 28 for each square metre of floor area. Before the plasterers arrive we check continuity and insulation resistance on every circuit, since SBC 401 forbids energising wiring that has not been inspected and tested. For the other building trades in the same town, see renovation in Ras Tanura and plastering in Ras Tanura.
Cable sizes and circuits in Ras Tanura homes
We size each cable for what it feeds, how far it runs, how it is laid and how hot its surroundings get, and pair it with a matching breaker. The figures below reflect typical practice across the Eastern Province and are only a guide; your drawing or our load sums decide the real size.
| Circuit | Common practice | Coastal note |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor lights | 1.5 to 2.5 mm² | Never shared with outside circuits |
| Sockets | 2.5 to 4 mm² | One RCD for rooms, another for wet areas |
| Split AC | 4 to 6 mm² | Sealed isolator next to the outdoor unit |
| Pump | By rating and distance | Outdoor isolator, cable in sun-resistant conduit |
| Outdoor lighting | By number of fittings and distance | Its own circuit behind its own RCD |
Outdoor AC units in salty air
The outdoor unit of an air conditioner stands on the roof or on a wall facing spray all year round. Each unit gets its own line and breaker, with a sealed isolator beside the outdoor unit so the AC technician can switch it off on the spot. The cable enters the unit’s box through a gland and is fixed to the wall in conduit rather than left hanging and swinging in the wind. Each AC feed with its own breaker costs from SAR 120.
Boards and earthing in a house near the sea
Where the board goes matters more in Ras Tanura than in an inland city. We mount it indoors in a dry, ventilated spot, away from doors that open towards the sea and away from bathrooms and laundries, and we use a board with a sealing cover. When servicing a board we open, clean and tighten the terminals, replace any that have corroded and rebalance the loads if a circuit is overloaded. Board servicing starts from SAR 185 and a full replacement from SAR 370.
SEC will not connect a building without earthing. We drive the electrode, test its resistance and bond the earth conductor to each outlet and each metal part, steel water tanks and pump bodies included. A full earthing set-up for a house costs from SAR 275. Water pipes are never used as the earth path, especially since most new ones are plastic and carry no current at all.
Checking an older house before you buy or rent in Ras Tanura
Many people who call us from Ras Tanura are about to move into a used house and want to know the state of its electrics before they sign. A test visit starts from SAR 90 and ends with a short report telling you what works safely, what needs repair soon, and what can wait. This is what we check:
- The board: its age, the condition of busbars and terminals, whether there is an RCD, and whether breakers match the cable sizes.
- Earthing: whether sockets have an earth conductor, and the resistance of the earth electrode.
- Insulation: an insulation-resistance measurement on each circuit to judge the cables inside the walls.
- Outdoor parts: boxes, floodlights, the roof socket and the pump box, and how far rust has gone.
- Voltage: whether the house is on 220 V or still has 127 V circuits and two-pin sockets.
- Loads: whether the board can take the number of AC units you plan, or new lines are needed.
The report helps you negotiate the price or rent, gives you an idea of what you will need to spend after moving in, and saves you from discovering the problem on the first humid night.
Rewiring older homes and 110 V to 220 V conversion in Ras Tanura
In older houses in Ras Tanura we sometimes find two-core wiring with no earth, rusted boxes inside walls next to bathrooms, or sockets on 127 V. We start by measuring insulation on each circuit. If the cables are sound and the problem is in the accessories and boxes, we change only those. If the insulation is weak or the cables have gone stiff, replacing them is the better choice: we pull new cables through the old conduits where they are sound, or cut new chases. Replacing a damaged cable section starts from SAR 165, re-wiring a whole room from SAR 460, and full-house rewiring is priced after inspection.
For a 110 V to 220 V conversion, the work inside the house is ours: a new board, breakers and three-pin 230 V sockets to the Saudi standard, while the supply change is coordinated with SEC. Plaster and paint disturbed by the work are made good with painting in Ras Tanura.
Outdoor lighting for yards and facades in Ras Tanura
Outdoor lighting is what fails most in coastal towns. We choose floodlights and fittings with coated aluminium or tough plastic bodies, stainless-steel screws and an ingress rating suited to rain and spray. Their cables run in conduit, and where they cross the yard we bury them at a safe depth bedded in sand under a strip of marker tape, and all outdoor circuits sit behind their own RCD. Each outdoor light point costs from SAR 75.
Bathroom and laundry electrics in Ras Tanura
Indoor humidity in Ras Tanura homes makes bathrooms and laundries need protection all the more. Wiring respects the bathroom zones in SBC 401, so the shower and bath areas get no sockets at all and only splash-rated lights overhead. In the laundry the washer and dryer sockets sit high enough to stay dry when the floor is washed, and are RCD-protected. Heaters run on a dedicated circuit with a two-pole switch by the bathroom door; connecting one costs from SAR 65.
Spotlights, chandeliers and indoor lighting
Indoors, lighting works as in any city, with extra care for ceilings next to bathrooms and kitchens where steam collects. Downlights go into the gypsum once the layout is agreed, LED drivers stay reachable through a service hatch, and a heavy chandelier hangs from an anchor in the slab, not the board. Pricing starts at SAR 9 per downlight with its hole cut, SAR 55 per chandelier and SAR 45 per metre of LED strip.
Seasonal checks that keep your electrics healthy near the sea
- Press the test button on every RCD from time to time and make sure it trips.
- Check outdoor boxes after winter: are the covers tight and the gaskets intact?
- Watch for green or white deposits on outdoor socket terminals or in the pump box.
- Do not pressure-wash the facade or roof straight at boxes and floodlights.
- If a breaker keeps tripping after dew, do not bypass it or fit a bigger one; send us a photo and we will find the cause.
Common mistakes in coastal electrics
- Indoor boxes fitted outdoors: a box with no gasket on the facade fills with water in the first winter.
- Conduit entering from the top of the box: water runs straight down the cable onto the terminals.
- One RCD for the whole house: damp in one floodlight cuts power to the fridge and the air conditioners.
- Plain steel screws: they rust and seize, and the electrician breaks the cover to open it.
- A pump on the roof socket: with no isolator nearby, someone ends up working on it live.

Worked example: protecting the outdoor electrics of a Ras Tanura house
A house near the sea with six floodlights on the boundary wall and facade whose boxes have failed, a single RCD for the whole house that trips on humid mornings, and a board that needs servicing:
- Installation test and insulation measurement: SAR 90
- Re-fitting 6 outdoor light points with sealed boxes and fittings: 6 × SAR 75 = SAR 450
- Two new RCDs in the board to separate outdoor and wet-area circuits: 2 × SAR 90 = SAR 180
- Board servicing and load rebalancing: SAR 185
- Labour comes to SAR 905; the floodlights, boxes and RCDs themselves are extra, and so is the trip from Dammam.
The numbers only show how a quote is built. Your test results may add a cable section or two to the list.
